-IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Preparation program focuses on developing exam techniques and preparing students for the listening, speaking, reading and writing tasks they will undertake in the IELTS exam. The program is intensive and is designed for students who wish to maximise their scoring potential on the IELTS exam within a short time frame.  The course provides practice and guidance in both general and academic test modes and aims to improve the student’s test taking techniques and their knowledge of the IELTS test format. Students undertake weekly tests based on IELTS past papers.IELTS is recognised by education providers in many countries, including Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK and the USA. It is also recognised by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies.More than 2 million people a year take the test.

What is the IELTS test like?

You can choose between the Academic or General Training versions of the test. All candidates do the same Listening and Speaking sections.

The test has four sections:

Listening – 4 sections, 40 questions, 30 minutes

Speaking – interview, 15 minutes

Reading – different for Academic or General Training – 3 sections, 40 questions, 60 minutes

Writing – different for Academic or General Training – 2 pieces of writing, 60 minutes

This site also contains vocabulary tests, including practice tests for the academic word list, as well as grammar tests that are relevant to IELTS.

Level and scores

Multi-level. You get a score between 1 and 9. Half scores such as 6.5 are possible. Universities often demand an IELTS score of 6 or 7. They may also demand a minimum score in each of the 4 sections.

-PTE

PTE Academic is a computer-based academic English language test aimed at non-native English speakers wanting to study abroad. It tests Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

Questions often test 2 skills together, such as listening and reading or reading and speaking. The whole test is done in a single session, lasting 3 hours and is taken sitting at a computer in a secure test environment. The speaking part of the exam is done on the computer. Your voice is recorded and sent for marking.

One advantage of this test is that you get your results very quickly.

The Occupational English Test (also known as OET) is the English language test for healthcare professionals. It assesses the language communication skills of healthcare professionals who wish to register and practise in an English-speaking environment.

OET is available for the following 12 professions: dentistry, dietetics, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, podiatry, radiography, speech pathology, and veterinary science.

OET is recognised by regulatory healthcare boards and councils in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland, Dubai, Singapore, Namibia and Ukraine. Many organisations, including hospitals, universities and colleges, are using OET as proof of a candidate’s ability to communicate effectively in a demanding healthcare environment.
